Beyond the Line for Red Bean Bread: A Taste Map Drawn by Gunsan's Bakeries and Cafes

From Iseongdang's rice-flour red bean bread to cafes in a disused rice warehouse and a Japanese-style wooden house, we map Gunsan's dessert landscape.

Gunsan's baking culture began at Iseongdang at the Jungang-ro crossroads and spread across the city.

It reached spicy seafood noodle soup bread in Susong-dong, a cafe in an old rice warehouse in Guam-dong, a roastery in a Japanese colonial-era house in Wolmyeong-dong and a terrace facing the sea on Jangjado Island. From how to read the timetable of the lines to the spatial beauty of cafes in restored buildings, we guide you through Gunsan's bread and coffee from several angles.

“To taste bread and coffee in Gunsan is to witness a moment when baking skills more than a hundred years old and the worn buildings of a port city are baked again with today's sensibility.”

The Timetable of Red Bean Bread and Vegetable Bread That Opens the Morning at 177 Jungang-ro

Morning air in Gunsan begins with the nutty smell of baking from the corner of 177 Jungang-ro. Iseongdang keeps its lights on 08:00–21:30 from Sunday through Thursday and until 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. It is called the oldest bakery still operating in Korea, but people remember it first for the thin, chewy texture of its rice-flour dough.

Red bean bread fills the shelves as soon as the doors open, along with vegetable bread packed with crisp cabbage filling and chubby bread heavy with red bean paste. These three are the pillars that have held up Iseongdang's history. There is no dedicated parking lot, and on weekend mornings the line stretches far along the sidewalk. It is much easier to come right after opening on a weekday, or to leave your car at a nearby public parking lot and walk.

When Rice Flour and Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup Meet Baking: A Variation in the Alleys of Susong-dong

When the old downtown's long baking tradition crosses into the city's residential areas, it combines with another side of Gunsan's food culture and takes on an unexpected look. Hongyun Bakery, at 40 Chukdongan-gil in Susong-dong, is a neighborhood bakery that boldly joins spicy seafood noodle soup, a Gunsan symbol, with rice baking.

Spicy seafood noodle soup bread, baked to bring out a spicy flavor, and soft pure rice cream cheese bread open an interesting crack in a souvenir list dominated by red bean bread. It opens 10:00–21:00 Monday through Saturday and until 17:00 on Sunday. It closes on the third and fifth Wednesday of each month, so check the calendar once before you go.

A Trading Company, a Garden by the Railroad and a Rice Warehouse Filled with the Smell of Coffee

With a bag of bread in hand, walk on to Haemangno and Guyeong-gil, where cafes that keep the frames of modern buildings let walkers rest their legs. Mijeu Coffee at 232 Haemangno is a restored building once used by a trading company in the 1930s. Its old-style hall on the 1st floor and tatami seating on the 2nd floor hold the mood of the open-port street as it was. Turn into 125-1 Guyeong 6-gil and you find Cafe TEUM, a converted building beside the old railroad with a garden in its yard. It is a good spot to look out over the green courtyard with a croissant ang-butter and an Einspänner.

Follow the Geumgang River from the old downtown to 253 Guam 3.1-ro, and you meet a space of a completely different scale. Cafe Migok Changgo SQUARE3.5, a remodeled old rice warehouse, serves specialty brewed coffee and a nutty almond cream latte under high ceilings and rough walls. The huge warehouse that once stacked rice has become a lounge where people's conversations linger.

How to Plan a Cafe Route from the Old Downtown to the Sea at Jangjado Island

Gunsan's cafe route does not stay downtown; it runs to the far edge of the Gogunsan Islands. Past Seonyudo Island, Cafe La Phare sits on a hill on Jangjado Island 2-gil. It opens 10:00–18:30 all year, offering a panorama of the West Sea islands along with a tangy Hallabong cream latte.

In the morning, link the old downtown area of Iseongdang, Mijeu Coffee and Cafe TEUM on foot. In the afternoon, move to Cafe Migok Changgo SQUARE3.5, which has its own parking, or to Cafe La Phare in the Gogunsan Islands. That way you cut parking stress and still experience every texture of the varied spaces Gunsan holds.
