Chae Man-sik Literary Museum in detail

Why Chae Man-sik Literary Museum was built: IMF-era budget cuts changed a plan for a Gunsan port-opening memorial hall

Chae Man-sik Literary Museum was built after a change of plans. The original goal was a memorial hall marking the 100th anniversary of the opening of Gunsan's port. But government funding fell sharply in the aftermath of the IMF crisis. As an alternative, Gunsan City and the Port Opening 100th Anniversary Committee planned a literary memorial hall for the writer Baengneung Chae Man-sik. Today the exhibition room shows materials on the 100th anniversary of the port opening along with materials on Chae Man-sik and his handwritten manuscripts.

Chae Man-sik Literary Museum opened on March 10, 2001, after preparations that began in 1998. Site selection began in June 1998, and the site of a sanitation and environment office at the Geumgang River estuary dam in Naeheung-dong was chosen. In September of the same year, Forum Architects of Jeonju won the design bid, and construction began on December 30. From 2000, work continued on the exhibition interior, equipment, rest facilities, and landscaping.
