When Raindrops Soak the Eaves: A Gunsan Indoor Route You Can Walk with Your Umbrella Folded

We lay out an indoor course on the museum combined ticket, plus hands-on centers, that stays comfortable even on days of rain or strong wind.

Even on days of fickle West Coast wind and rain or cold midwinter winds, a Gunsan trip holds steady.

We used data to design a no-umbrella, minimal-walking route. It links the Haemang-ro museum belt packed within a 500 m radius, the exhibition inside the Wibongham warship, the climate experience hall on the Geumgang River and indoor exhibition halls open all year.

“On a day when raindrops fall from the eaves, step through the door of a red-brick exhibition hall. The bad weather outside then becomes a backdrop that brings the port of a hundred years ago into sharp focus.”

Four Indoor Exhibition Halls on Haemangno with One Combined Ticket

On days when rain falls from the morning or the West Sea wind is strong, the Haemang-ro museum belt is the most reliable shelter. Around the Gunsan Modern History Museum are the Gunsan Modern Architecture Museum, a restored former Bank of Joseon building, and the Gunsan Modern Art Museum, in the former Japanese 18th Bank building. Together with the exhibition inside the Wibongham warship at Jinpo Marine Park, they are all within a few minutes' walk.

Instead of separate tickets, buy the museum combined ticket for 3,000 won for adults (2,000 won for youth and soldiers, 1,000 won for children) and see the paid exhibition halls in one go. In particular, the Modern Life Hall on the 3rd floor of the Modern History Museum recreates the streets and shops of 1930s Gunsan indoors. You can enjoy the feel of an alley trip without getting wet.

From Below the Deck of a Landing Ship to the Future Experience Center at the Geumgang Estuary

Leave the museum and walk a little toward the inner harbor, and you face the huge Wibongham (LST) moored at Jinpo Marine Park. It looks like an outdoor park, but the heart of a visit is inside the landing ship, which served in the Korean War and other wars: barracks living quarters and a naval battle history gallery. You can fold your umbrella and look around slowly.

Drive toward the Geumgang estuary and the Geumgang Future Experience Center awaits, with climate change and renewable energy as its themes. You can enter on a single ticket of 2,000 won for adults (1,000 won for youth, 500 won for children). Or use the Geumgang area combined ticket (5,000 won for adults), which bundles the March 1st Movement 100th Anniversary Memorial Hall, the Chae Man-sik Literary Museum and more. It is just right for spending half a day with children on a rainy day.

Indoor Spaces Open All Year, Ready Even for a Rainy Monday

If the rainy day happens to be a Monday, when the city museums all close, shift the axis of your route boldly. The Teddy Bear Museum on Guyeong 7-gil is a reliable alternative, open 10:00–19:00 all year round. It recreates the history and culture of many countries in teddy bear dioramas, so you can visit regardless of weather or day of the week.

If you want to watch the inner harbor through large indoor windows, Gunsanhang 1981 in Jangmi-dong makes a good rest stop. From indoor seats right by the sea, you can watch rain fall on the harbor water over a warm drink and a meal.

Strategies for Rain-Free Parking and Time Allocation

On a rainy day, how well a trip goes depends on the walking distance from the parking lot to the indoor entrance. In the morning, park in the Modern History Museum parking lot, then spend about 2 hours 30 minutes on the museum's main building and the Gunsan Modern Architecture Museum and Gunsan Modern Art Museum right next to it.

After lunch, move to the Geumgang Future Experience Center or the Teddy Bear Museum, which have free parking lots right in front of the buildings. That cuts the time you walk under an umbrella to 1–2 minutes or less.
