The Density of One or Two Nights: How to Stay, from Korean-Style Rooms in the Old Downtown to the Forest on Sinsido Island
We compare stays by area: a lodging with Korean-style rooms on Dongguksa Temple Road, a hotel near Eunpa Lake, Sinsido National Recreational Forest and beach lodgings on Seonyudo Island.

After six in the evening, when the day-trippers have left, Gunsan offers a quiet time granted only to those who stay.
We look at the features of six stays by area. They range from a lodging with Korean-style rooms in the old downtown next to the bamboo grove of Dongguksa Temple and a hotel near Eunpa Lake Park. They go on to Sinsido National Recreational Forest at the entrance of the Gogunsan Islands and a beach resort on Seonyudo Island. We also cover check-in times and route planning.

“Depending on which neighborhood you rest your pillow in, the first scene of Gunsan you meet when you open the window the next morning may be a bamboo grove or the calm waves of the West Sea.”
Sandeul, a Lodging with Korean-Style Rooms in the Old Downtown That Opens Quiet Mornings on Dongguksa Temple Road
If you want to be the first to walk the old downtown's dawn alleys, Sandeul at 7-3 Dongguksa-gil makes a good base camp. Dongguksa Temple, Mallaengi Village and the Japanese-style House in Sinheung-dong are all a few minutes' walk from this lodging. With just 5 Korean-style rooms with heated floors, it offers a calm night without bustle.
Check in at 15:00 and park your car, and you do not need to drive again until check-out at 11:00 the next day. Walk out at 08:00, when Iseongdang opens, and bring back freshly baked bread. Or have the quiet bamboo grove of Dongguksa Temple to yourself before the tourists arrive. That is the biggest appeal of staying in the old downtown.

Business and Family Hotels Covering Eunpa Lake Park and the Gateway to Saemangeum
If you prefer reliable hotel service and ample rooms, two hotels, one on the west side of the city and one at the entrance to Saemangeum, anchor your stay. Ramada Gunsan Hotel at 400 Daehak-ro has 137 rooms and is next to Eunpa Lake Park, an ideal location for a night walk on the bridge over the lake after dinner. Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 12:00, so you can plan the next morning at a more relaxed pace.
In Osikdo-dong (435 Saemangeumbuk-ro), midway between the old downtown and the Gogunsan Islands, is the 181-room Best Western Gunsan Hotel. Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 11:00. Bieung Port and the road onto the Saemangeum Seawall are right in front, which makes it an efficient base for travelers heading to the islands early the next morning.

Forest Cabins Facing the Sea and a Resort 2 Minutes on Foot from the Beach
If your night's destination is not the city but the nature of the West Sea, move your lodging into the Gogunsan Islands. Sinsido National Recreational Forest at 271 Sinsido-gil has forest cabins and a forest culture lodge. For 4–5-person rooms, rates are 44,000–58,000 won on off-season weekdays and 76,000–106,000 won on peak-season weekends. All rooms and trails open toward the West Sea, and it counts among Korea's leading coastal recreational forests (check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00).
If you want to stay close to the beach on Seonyudo Island, Seonyudo Resort at 129-6 Seonyubuk-gil is convenient. It has a parking lot for 100 cars, and Seonyudo Beach is a 2-minute walk away. If you want quiet pension-style lodging in the farming and fishing area on the mainland side and want to cook for yourself, Euro Village at 26 Sinjang-gil, Okgu-eup, is a practical alternative (25 rooms, cooking available, check-in 15:00, check-out 12:00).
A Formula for Matching Lodging and Areas for 1-Night, 2-Day and 2-Night, 3-Day Trips
For a 1-night, 2-day trip, the steadiest route starts with the old downtown and Haemang-ro on the first day. Stay at Ramada Gunsan Hotel near Eunpa Lake Park or at Sandeul on Dongguksa Temple Road, and drive around the Gogunsan Islands the next day.
For a stay of 2 nights and 3 days or more, spend the first night in the old downtown (Sandeul or Ramada) enjoying the alleys and the lake at night. On the second night, move to Sinsido National Recreational Forest or Seonyudo Resort to fully enjoy the West Sea sunset and beach walks. We strongly recommend this '1 night in the old downtown + 1 night in Gogunsan' plan.
